Search for the Eastern King...

coluberking25 May 28, 2006 04:55 PM

Hey I'm relatively new to this forum despite the fact that my cal king is 3 or 4 years old. Well, I have been hearing of people finding eastern kings around my area, but I've never seen one. Can I get some advice on where and when to look for these banded beauties? If it helps, I live in a suburban area near Philadelphia. Tons of wood boards, but the only thing I have ever found under them is one northern red salamander. Oh, and I just wish to see them in the wild and photograph them, I do not wish to kep them as pets.

I would think you'd get a medal if you find one in PA.
Maybe in New Jersey pine barrens would be your best bet?
Good luck!

Yea I am searching in NJ. Not the pine barrens, but people have said they found kingsnakes in the area I am searching. I checked it out today. No snakes, but a snapper and frogs. I even saw deer and a fox! But there's tons of piles of junk and I'm surprised I didn't find anything this morning.

Hey, that sounds like a good spot to start.

All animals love a good pile of junk!

Maybe this time of year you should try flipping the junk real early in the morning, as the sun starts to get warm the junk may be too hot. If nuthin turns up this year, at least you have another spot to hit a little earlier next spring.

good luck to you.

A word of caution...

The NJ DEP takes a very dim view of field herping. You could (potentially) be in a world of hurt if you have anything that could be construed as collecting appratus. Bring nothing but a camera and take nothing but pictures if you are herping in NJ.

I live in Gloucester county. All I've seen is garters around my house. I have some woods behind my house and a little stream. Maybe soon I'll go out looking for something in the woods.
