question about JCP color genetics

pal Jul 31, 2003 02:13 PM

I have a 2.5 year old female JCP - 5.5 feet long with a quite nice banana yellow color. The pet store where I buy supplies has an amazing male JCP who is looking for a new home. He is 1.5 years, 4 feet long. He is black and almost white. The off-white areas are broad. He is very striking. Outside of postings on this forum, I have never seen a JCP who is as nicely colored as my female. This male is strikingly different. Do you have any idea what a cross between a rich yellow and black and a white and black JCP would result in? I have too many snakes (according to my husband and children!) but I am intrigued by this guy. Your job is to either convince me that it would be a really bad idea to get him (he comes with a cage) or to help support my ridiculous idea that I can't survive without him.

Always love to hear about other ladies who love snakes...Carpets are addicting! You've been warned!

The male sounds like he has great color. The thing you want to watch out for is black-tipping in the yellow/white areas. This trait causes a 'muddy' look to what idealy should be pure yellow/white coloring. Now some carpets will get more black tipping with age, and many breeding females develope it. Also I've seen some that have black-tipping that actually looks pretty good on the snake. But to have as little as possible is the goal of most Jungle Carpet breeders.

As far as what white background color will do to Banana yellow coloring...well, I'm no geneticist. The only thing I know for sure is that Carpets in general are highly variable in color. And truely I've seen pictures of white colored breeders throw bright yellow offspring several times. The biggest advice I can give you is watch out for black-tipping!...So my vote is to get him if he has clean color...

And everything in between. JCP color is not a simple recessive gene or even a set of simple recessive genese. Its very complicated and complex. Most just take all the qualities they like and try to breed like animals together. But no way anyone can predict what your possible pair will yield. Impossible.
