Herping in AZ....please help!

metalmistress3 May 29, 2006 01:10 AM

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. 13th street and Bell. I hike at Saddleback Mountains. I have never seen a snake. Even when I lived out in the middle of the desert (Rio Verde) for 4 years I only saw 2 snakes! A rattler and a gopher. Everytime I hike on the mountains I look for snakes (kings, rosy boas, gophers, sand snake....etc.) Not looking for rattlers or anything venomous. Me and my boyfriend have done "flipping". Flipped over big rocks. Nothing! Not one snake. Only saw one baby lizard!
HELP!
What are the best places to find snakes??? (in Phoenix, close to 13th street and Bell)
And whats the best time to go???

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.
And Thank You very much for your time.

Oh and one more thing, about the numbers, do I have this right? MALE.FEMALE.UNKNOWN
Am I listing these right?

2.0 Bearded Dragon
1.0 Cockatiel
0.0.1 Side-Blocthed Lizard
1.1 Ferret
0.2 Cat
1.0 Dog (Chow/Husky Mix)

the numbers are right.
M.F.U.

I don't know about anywhere specific in AZ but early morning or around sunset/just after dark is usually most productive. Snakes will be found in higher densities in areas with artificial cover like boards or sheet metal. Also try anywhere you can think of that has a semi reliable water source near by.

FYI, most people don't want to give away their favorite herping sites to a ton of people over the internet so you'll probobly be on your own.

Hi there. I live on 47th ave and Bell. Have you tried the AHA Forum?

sloanmonster.com

There is a Field Herping forum there. You will get a general idea of locations around town, but no one will divulge their best herping spots on the net.

Also, you are correct with your numbers:

1.2.3 = 1 male, 2 females, & 3 unknown.

Good luck and happy herping!

And stop flipping rocks. How would you like your house flipped, even if they(aliens) flipped it back?(your an alien to them, you know) As you noticed, your not hurting snake homes, your disturbing all sorts of other animals homes.

I would imagine if you went up and just sat there, and "looked" you would see all sorts of great stuff, including snakes.

I hope you have a hunting lic.? Better get one.

Sorry for being all nasty and stuff, but it doesn't seem all that right. People without sense, aimlessly destorying nature. Just think about what your doing, Arizona is chock-O-block full of snakes. There must be a reason you cannot find them. Bad Karma perhaps. Cheers

It's ok to flip, just make sure to put the rocks back EXACTLY where you found them. You may be too late. Start flipping in Feb and March. Too hot now, so stick to road cruising at night. I theeeeeen so.
