Pig Blankets

Grape May 29, 2006 10:57 AM

I have 5 sulcata's that i'd like to keep outdoors 24/7, the enclosure is all built and the house is in place but I'd like to heat it. A ceramic heat emitter wldnt work, so i figured a pig blanket, however I don't know where to find one. Also, can anyone tell me how they set their's up. (did they just put it on the floor? cover it? etc..)
Thanks for the help

We have 1 large sulcata & we use both, a CHE & pig blanket during winter. The CHE is pointed in one corner of her home so she has the option to use heat from above & below, she can move to the other corner for heat from below only, or she can move to the other side & use neither. Yes the pig blanket is just sitting on the floor not covered with anything.
I bought a Kane & got it directly from the manufacturer. You can find them at http://www.kanemfg.com/
or you can do a search for reptile suppliers because several of them sell either the Kane brand or other brands of pig blankets that are similar to it.
If you're like me you'll want to shop around before you buy.
Have fun looking for one.

Osborne! That's the other one I was trying to think of.
After I'd already bought the Kane brand I started seeing a lot of recommendations for the Osborne but since I'd already bought I couldn't buy one of those too. Osborne is highly recommended by a lot of tortoise keepers though so keep that in mind as you shop.

LLL has had the best prices I've found so far.

In GA and FL, I would recommend suspending your pig blanket from the ceiling of their enclosure.
The heat directly on the ground will attract ants - especially fire ants which are not the best thing to share space with your sulcatas.
Just a little trick of the trade that I picked up by listening to a successful tortoise breeder from FL.
Good luck.

I suspected the same thing you mentioned. In SD I had a great ant population under all the matts.
