What do you think?

the_jackel May 29, 2006 03:42 PM

Hello everyone...I bought this gal as a normal but after reading all the posts about Yellow Belly's it appeared she had a lot of the markers...so I thought I would get the experts opinions. I realize I will have to breed her to prove it...but what the consensus says will dictate how I breed her.

and...

Normal, what markers were you seeing?

As you can tell I am very new...but

1. she has a spot on her head
2. has blushing throughout her back
3. some flames up her side
4. what I would consider a granite belly pattern.

But again I am new and could be "seeing" more than is there. I was trying to compare to other postings of YB's.

Thanks

Check the hunters guide. It has some nice examples on it.

Thanks...I did check out both the hunters guide and the recent post...that is were I started to get the idea she might have been. Technically, she has everything the guide showed in some form or another...but not exactly in the same way...which is why I asked for help. I guess I need to see more to really understand what I am looking for.

Thanks

I think the belly needs to have the black pushed further out (like the middle scale and at least half if not all of the two outside belly scales). Also, the black at the edges of that wider white/mottled yellow belly needs to be broken up in unusually small pieces. To me it's like the normal black on the belly was shattered into small pieces and swept into piles at the outer edge of the belly. Not an expert and not even sure all genetic yellow bellies live up to that description but that is what I’ve noticed about the most obvious yellow bellies.

the_jackel May 29, 2006 03:57 PM

Clearly the hardest part to get.

Can someone posts a few images of true YB belly's? I would greatly appreciate it and would help me learn this stuff.

Thanks

06 female Yellow Belly. Hope this helps.

the_jackel May 29, 2006 05:35 PM

Thank you...is it the little black dots on the belly that is the key to a yellow belly? She is very nice looking but I only see subtle differences between yours and mine.

For example - both have "flames" but yours are higher?
Yours has a lot of little black dots on the belly and mine doesn't have nearly as many?

Thanks again just trying to understand as a newbie I don't want to end up getting taken advantage of becuase I can tell one from another.

PHLdyPayne May 29, 2006 05:12 PM

Very beautiful normal, I dont' think she's a yellow belly. She does have alot of the yellow my own female normal has. She is quite nice looking.

Yours does NOT even look close to that picture in that ad. I know Terry well and the ones he has have been verified as TRUE YELLOW BELLIES and YOU will GET IVORYs from them. On the other hand YOURS looks NOTHING like his, Your Has a ton of belly Pattern, Yellow bellies have this LOOK, you just gotta study them to know them. YES, some Yellow bellies are TRICKY, but you HAVE TO KNOW what you are looking for in order to get a good one. I have seen several Yellow bellies posted that are totally NOT Yellow bellies, Its like this if you can get one CHEAP that MIGHT be a YELLOW BELLY then so be it, But if you are gonna pay the Big bucks you need to do the research and KNOW without a Doubt or buy from a proven line. Ask questions and make sure you know what MORPH you are buying. I am not trying to bash your animal, By all means if you think its a yellow belly then PROVE IT OUT and PROVE us WRONG. Hope that helps, Thanks David

All these Below are classic Yellow bellies

the_jackel May 29, 2006 08:31 PM

Thanks...and I am doing exactly what you suggest...asking a lot of questions so I understand what to really look for in a YB.

As for the post about the ad I was in no way trying to discredit him just understand the differences. Mine not being one is no big deal...I stated upfront I bought it as a normal it just appeared (to the untrained eye...mine) to look like what has been described as a YB. However, Jon did an awesome job of using my own picture to help me understand.

So again thanks all for the education.

TerryHeuring May 29, 2006 09:01 PM

I noticed you referenced my add,not a problem but those snakes are guaranteed to be yellow bellies. Also here is a pic of a goog example.Terry

TerryHeuring May 29, 2006 09:36 PM

Here is one more pic of a yearling female.Hope this helps you out.Terry

EmberBall May 29, 2006 10:57 PM

Now that is a nice Yellow Belly. For you newbies, please note when the tail wraps around the wrist, it has a stainless steel look, THAT is a tell tail sign it is a YB.

the_jackel May 30, 2006 07:16 AM

Thanks Terry...very nice snake.

I am glad you didn't take my referencing your ad the wrong way. I wasn't trying to discredit you in anyway...more of a learning point for me of "...if mine wasn't what made this one."

Thanks again I have learned a lot about YB...which makes me want a true one all the more.

I hope this helps you out a bit and i think this is what you were asking for...

1. Where the RED circles are there should be "Flames" in yours there is just black bands

2. In Blue is where the speckling is ON THE STOMACH. It should be off to the sides, where the blue arrow is.

3. In GREEN those areas should be Yellow not white.

I could do the top of your animal too, but i think this shows enough.

If you need more help check out my "Hunters Guide to the Moprhs" at www.nextworldexotics.com/hg.htm i think this will help you understand

Hope this helps

Awesome Jon...Thank you so much this is exactly what I was after...very clear. I loved your hunters guide...but until you see it on your snake it is hard to make the connection from what it should be to what you are actually seeing. Amazing how it all comes down to details.

Thanks again all for your help...this newbie really appreciates it.

PHLdyPayne May 30, 2006 01:59 PM

Yellow bellies are tricky to recognize. The hunter's guide is a great addition for those hard to tell het markers (ie pied, yellow belly) and even some morphs.

Jackal, your snake looks similar to mine, with the high yellow sides, and white trimming.
