Patternless Copperhead

Rainshadow May 29, 2006 06:03 PM

This photo was taken by some friends,in Charleston,SC. they took the pic "in situ" and sent it to us hoping we could identify the animal for them...needless to say, I was floored when I took a look! I've asked them to send any other pictures they may have taken of it. I'll post more if I get them...VERY cool looking,I've never seen one like it,anyone else??? (sorry the pic is so small )

I cropped the head from the photo for a little closer look,I see no trace of facial markings,(bad angle though.) it does have some reduced lateral pattern, but no real trace of the typical banding.

There's a photo of a patternless copperhead in Bechtel's book "REPTILE & AMPHIBIAN VARIANTS Colors, Patterns, & Scales" from Krieger Pub, 1995. That this photo was taken "in situ" makes it noteworthy, to my mind. Was the animal photographed & left alone, or captured?

As far as I know, these people weren't "snake people",so I'm sure they didn't capture it.(that was my first question too! *lol*) they made no mention of killing it,so I'm assuming they simply took the photo, and let it be.(?) We've emailed them, but haven't heard back yet,I'm hoping they may have taken more than just the one picture.

That looks like a cottonmouth to me. Will Bird

That would definitely be something nice to come across. Seems like it's always the herp laypersons who encounter such rarities though eh? Kinda like how I can't seem to come across a single Crote around here, yet any redneck with a shovel can walk out into the woods and the rattlers seem to crawl to them!
