Friday, May 26, 2006 - Black Gap

Shaky May 29, 2006 07:01 PM

A very weird night.
We were warned not to attempt Black Gap due to impending storms, but we couldn't see any big thunderheads that way from Marathon, so we decided to give it a go.

Well, some of you have probably heard about it.

In the sporadic sprinkling (and occasionally heavy showers), we rode Black Gap from sunset until almost 5 AM. Five cars were down there that night - Ed Acuna, Troy Wismar, and us (Jack Jeansonne and Dana Larsen) along with Roy ? from Sanderson. A Lamar College van was also roaming, looking for atrox.

Among the odd finds were a hypo Hypsiglena and a Trimorphodon.

I'll wait to speak about any alterna until I can post pictures of everything.

Until then, I leave you with a question: Have multiple alterna ever been found in Black Gap on the same night?

Black Gap is the besy "documented" road in all of alterna land. Both Dan Johnson and Troy Hibbitts have extensive collecting records for alterna from there. To the best of my knowlege, BG has had only 2 multiple alterna nights and maybe just one. I know Chris Sheldon and Dan Johnson each found one on the same night in July of 91 or 92 and Troy and Mike Forstner might of also done that on the same night also in 91 or 92 but no one [until now?] has caught 2 themselves. Congrats on being the first!! BA

Thanks for the info.
I dont really mean to explore the "records" any further. We were just wondering.

Give us some more details and pics. You can't leave us hanging like that.

I'm going to wait to give the whole story at once, but real quick:
Dana Larsen and I (in the same car, of course) caught two that night, on cuts.

Shaky..........All of us are waiting with baited breath for the account and the accompanying pics. Don't leave us hangin' too long. On a personal note, I saw my first grayband the first time I cruised Black Gap back in '99. It was an interesting evening. The first half of the road heading down from Stillwells had a good rain, but the last half was dry. All of the snakes were on the dry half. I collected a large suboc that evening that I still have to this day. Needless to say, Black Gap is a special place for me. Hopefully, I'll be out there during the new moon in June to give it another shot.

Give it up now Stevo! You are in the same boat with me just like the River Road! Even if you find another one in the GAP, it will be a fresh road kill by the rancher driving ahead of you!!! HAHAHAHA!!! Save your gas money and hunt pigmy's and corals!
