Shell and Swimming Qs

RESMom May 29, 2006 10:14 PM

I have a two yr old male and I've just transferred him to a 30 gallon tank about 1/3 full of water and some rocks to bask on: he doesn't actually swim, he kind of just crawls around - shouldn't he swim? And his shell has a few thin, fingernail like scales on the scutes that look like they're peeling off - I've never noticed him shedding before, is this normal?
He's eating fine and basking (when I'm not looking - he dives for his log otherwise) Oh and when is a RES mature? I'm trying to get him to eat greens, but he still prefers meats/fish/pellets

If the 30 gallon tank is only 1/3 full, the water may not be deep enough for him to swim. You may try to raise the basking platform and make the water a little deeper. Make it deeper than his shell is long. For the feeding, check with a local nursery who handles pond supplies and put some pieces of ANACHARIS in the tank with them. Some pet stores will also sell this in their aquatics areas. This is an aquatic plant that my turtles have always loved and I believe it is a good source of vitamin A.

Thanks!
I think he needed to get settled in a bit better (its a new, larger tank). He's swimming a bit, but I am going to take your advice and deepen the water - all I have to do is raise his basking rock...which is more difficult than it sounds cos its about 15 lbs and just fits in the tank
