Fowler's Toads

MissMiniZoo May 29, 2006 10:24 PM

I recently found a Fowler's Toad that I intend to keep. I have looked all over the internet for a care sheet. I'm assuming they are similar in care to American Toads, but want to be sure. So far he has been eating small crickets.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of toad?

Yes, they are similiar in care as with the American Toad. I've had a couple Fowler's for two years now and both actually hibernate during the winter months in my basement. Try to also offer different foods to him for variety. It'll take time, but basically he should accept different insects as long as they're moving.

Thanks for the reply. He/she's been doing great. He eats the crickets and any other bugs I can find to give him. He's been alot of fun to watch too. I've read that they are nocturnal, but he seems to be diurnal. He's up and moving around alot during the day...pretty active little guy. Maybe that will change as he matures? How large are your toads? How active are they? Where did you find them? What type of enclosure do you have them in?

My little guy is in a 10 gallon that is going to be set up with a false bottom, plants, little "creek" and small shallow "pond." This will be my first attemp at a false bottom...if all goes well, I may rearrange my firebelly toads' 29 gallon. Right now it's planted, but only has gravel as drainage. It also is divided by a piece of plexi-glass...

I'm looking forward to hearing about your toads!

They are a lot of fun to watch. Mine are pretty diurnal also, and they love to come over to the side of the tank to greet me hoping for food of course. It would seem that I have a couple of females; they never make a sound and they get along well. We found both of them a way south of where I live. They are both about 3" long and are in a 20 gallon long tank with lots of dirt, hide spots, plants and a nice sized water bowl.

Your set up sounds absolutely great, and I'm sure that your toad will be toadily happy!
