Peruvians:Ortoni or Longicauda?

tdobrov May 30, 2006 12:21 AM

Are Peruvian Boas properly called Boa Constrictor Ortoni
or Boa Constrictor Longicauda? I have come across both names. Is this an older name (ortoni)? Same subspecies?

Boa constrictor constrictor is the most common Peruvian subspecies. These are the Peruvian red-tails or BCC you will often see for sale. Two common locales are Pucallpa, and Iquitos.

Boa constrictor longicauda are more rare, but are available. This subspecies refers to a geographic population from Northwestern Peru in the Tumbes area. Also called Long-tailed or Black-tailed Boa.

Boa constrictor ortoni is not a fully accepted taxon, although I feel it is valid. Vin Russo has some pictures on his website that you can view of this subspecies. I do not know the exact locale of origin. I do know that it is from Peru, and that they aren't available in captivity. If you see someone selling Ortoni they are most likely either uneducated, or trying to pull one over on you. So be careful.
