PTS Enclosure question (plant related. kind of urgent!)

Deke Jul 31, 2003 03:05 PM

I'm obtaining my PTS fairly soon, and am currently putting together the vivarium. I thought it may be an idea to find a tree that would be suitable, instead of buying synthetic materials. Does anyone know of a suitable tree. The viv will be 3ft high, 4ft long and 2ft wide. Obviously it'll have to do well in the warmth, and provide the right humidity, while being stable enough for him to climb in. Any suggestions?

Deke,

Before you work on the tree, You need to rework the deal on the enclosure! The dimensions you gave would work for a BTS but NOT a PTS. A Fossorial species would do fine with a restricted height as that, But Corucia zebrata is a high-Canopy Arboreal species. The height should be the paramount dimension.

I like artifical personally. I think you can do far more design wise that way with fewer worries of pathogens. If you go with live plants, you can use Pothos but due to Corucia's predilection for them you'd have to replace them often.

I would make the largest dimension the height, so they can have more vertical space for climbing- they will use it!
I have used pothos and ficus in my enclosures, but destruction WILL happen sooner than you will like. I have mine decorated with silk plants, and put in live plants as an edible treat every week or so (mostly fresh mulberry branches).
The wooden hides have plastic plants hanging around them to provide more security.

Thanks for the advice. I based my viv size only on information i'd gathered from sites etc. I've made the phone call, and the vivarium will be 5ft high, 4 ft long and 2ft in depth. Hope this is ok now?

Haha brilliant! I try to give all my reptiles (and amphibians) as much room as is possible in my bedroom. I can't wait to get my own place. hehe
