Baby Texas rat snake question

Luis May 30, 2006 03:35 AM

Hello
Do baby Texas rats mostly hide or out and about climbing if enclosure has branches, etc ?
I plan to get one but havent bought enclosure yet and was planning on plenty of room for climbing. I keep kings/milks which as babies mostly hid . Now out much more . I know some babies do best first year in smaller enclosures but would think rat snakes might prefer more room even as baby.

Thanks

Luis

Most very young snakes spend most of their time hiding. This is nature's way of keeping them from getting eaten. Most snakes, as they get older and larger also get bolder and will spend more time in the open. Texas Rats will climb, so providing them with a hiding branch is a good idea. Keep in mind that these snakes can grow to over five feet, so the cage can never be too large.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Best of luck with your new snake.
