Rodent Allergies....

CBH May 30, 2006 04:39 PM

I have developed over the last year what I (and my doctor) believe to be allergies to Rats? Just curious if anyone else has allergic rxns to Rats and if so do you have rxns to other mammals? I have never been allergic to anything in the past and find it interesting...

Thanks!

Chris

I am very allergic to them as well as rabbits and guinea pigs. Even when the rats are frozen, if one of the nails scratches me I have a reaction. I did have a small group of rats but I had trouble breathing in the morning so I had to give them up. I know their is medications but I currently do not take any.

I too had a small group of rats but had breathing problems....and nail scratching caused swelling etc... have not been around rabbits for a while...do you notice any problems with mice??

Thanks,
Chris

Not that I have noticed. But I have mostly used rats so I'm not positive.

I have a small rodent colony with a few mouse and rat racks ...when I spend too much time around them I start coughing, wheezing and have ended up losing my voice several times ...just like a bad dust or pollen allergy... I now wear a surgical mask when I have to be around live rodents ... that seems to work well. Never had a problem with frozen ones though so I'm switching most everything I can to f/t... try a mask, it should help.

cheers, John

I too have breathing problems if I spend time in my "rat room". I too wear a mask and it helps greatly.
