care questions

mmh May 30, 2006 05:08 PM

I purchased a blue stripped western ribbon snake from a pet store who told me he was a year old return from a person who could no longer keep him.

? Why is he so mean? Are they all like this? If i simply walk by his cage he strikes at the glass. Heaven forbid i try to pick him up. He bites and wraps his hind end around my arm in order to spray me. Is there any hope that he will calm down?

? The only thing i can get him to eat are rosy reds. He ignores crickets and guppies and doesn't seem to like the taste of goldfish. Since i can't get too close to him i haven't yet tried worms.....will he take worms? I did get some liquid calcium suppliments to put in the water. The use directions are pig latin to me so if anyone can give me clear, straight forward advice about how much (oz., or ml.) to put in his 10oz. water dish and how often i would appreciate it.
Thank you.
melissa.

Most thamnophis in general have nasty attitudes...

Ribbon snakes usually prey on fish/frogs over worms/bugs considering the majority live right next to water. It's good he doesn't like goldfish... Goldfish are bad for snakes, stick to the rosy reds for now.

They can become tame with time and handling.
