Ghost Cal Kings.... where oh where...

byron.d May 30, 2006 05:22 PM

Hey gang! anyone producing these this season...??

I remember some years back there were issues with fertility and the bloodline being weak, but I have to assume that by now those concerns have been hammered out....

Thoughts...

I bought a pair of baby Ghosts (1.1) from Brian at B.H.B. in 2002. At that time he explained to me that he had fertility problems when breeding Ghost x Ghost. He said that he outbred them to other cal kings. In 2004 my female Ghost would NOT breed the male. All she wanted to do was kill him. I did not breed her in 2004, but I did breed my male Ghost to an albino female. I have one male from that breeding that I kept. No fertility problems in that breeding. He is a double het(albino & Ghost). He is pictured below. In 2005 I tried breeding my Ghosts and again the female Ghost wanted to kill the male Ghost...so I put my big Albino High White male in with her. She tried to attack him twice and I had to thump her head both times before the male Albino High White was able to breed her. No fertility problems as she laid 7 eggs and all 7 hatched. That is when I found out that she (female Ghost) is also het for albino. Out of the seven eggs, 5 turned out to be albino, 100% het for Ghost. Unfortunately all 7 happen to be male. Interesting about this pairing is THAT ALL 7 HAVE ORANGE ON THEIR BELLIES ! ! This year she tried to kill the male Ghost again. It is an immediate response, she obviously does not like her sibling brother. So I bred a bigger male (Hypo from Great Valley Serpentarium-what he calls a "Lavender". She is now due to lay eggs any day. Last year I bred my male Ghost to a large female Mendota (hypermelanistic) and she laid 9 eggs, all hatched producing double hets (hypermelanism & Ghost). I will be breeding some of them back to each other next year. This year I bred my male Ghost to an Albino High Yellow female and to my 18 month old Albino High White Reverse Stripe female. The Albino High White Reverse Stripe female laid 6 good eggs.

So, no fertility problems when bred to other cal kings. I have no idea about breeding Ghost x Ghost yet. Next year will be the first year that I will produce Ghosts...of course they will all be possible hets for something else as well LOL
