Question about albino Cal Kings

waspinator421 May 31, 2006 03:53 AM

I have been trying to figure this out on my own, but I keep getting mixed up. Of all the adult albino banded/striped California Kingsnakes I have seen they are white and yellow. Of all the youngsters I have seen they are pinkish and white/yellow. My question is, what part would have been black had it not been albino? I am thinking it is the pinkish color on the hatchlings.... but which color does that turn into on the adult....white? yellow?

I suppose this turned in to more than one question, but any help is appreciated. I am considering adding an albino to my collection, but want to learn a little more about them before doing so.

Thanks!

Albinos from coastal cal kings (brown and yellow) look different then from desert phase cal kings (black and white). The pink saddles are where the black would be and the yellow or sometimes white stays sort of the same as on a normal.

Also, hatchlings have much more defined color contrast and tend to lighten up as they age... again just like the regulars.

Not every albino will look the same since not every normal cal king will look the same. If a normal cal king does not have any yellow, then it won't have any yellow when albino.

What is yellow on a normal is also yellow on an albino.

What is black on a normal is white on an albino.

So a cal king that is black with yellow bands would be a white cal king with yellow bands.

A nice black and white cal king will be white with white bands as an adult.

Of course, there are different shades of black/brown and different shades of white/cream and therefore different shades of albinos.

The pink on the albino babies will normally turn into white as adults. The yellow on the babies will stay yellow on the adults.

Kerby,I've been trying to produce white with yellow band cal kings. The mother of these two, 03 and 04 kings was albino white with yellow bands, and fathers were dark brown with white bands. these two (03-04) produced 7 eggs( not due for 7 weeks), do you think they will produce any white with yellow bands? I also bred the 04 back to his mother trying to produce white with yellow bands, again(14 eggs due in about 7 weeks)
PS. their 2 and 3yrs. old and still as pink as ever, in fact they turned a more dark,lavender-pink with age.(not that I'm complaining)LOL. I don't think they will turn white? Any thought or comment would be appreciated.

Thanks; Robert

a bunch of albino cal kings that were white with yellow bands. I do have a female that is pink with white bands, does not look like she will be changing either.

Just find the blackest cal kings with yellow bands and introduce the albino gene.

Good luck on those and please post pics when everything hatches. Every year someone produces somthing unusual! Can't wait to see what pops out for everyone this year.

Its a tough find. Most cals with yellow bands are brown. I have never seen a truely white albino with yellow bands. Does anyone have pics?

Here's one, white albino Cal King with Brite yellow bands. As of now, I haven't been able to reproduce another in the past two years, I'm hoping this year with her two pink albino sibling should be able to produce one, the gene should be their!
