Spay anything?

mssierrak May 31, 2006 11:01 AM

I just got back from the vet with Boudicca. Turns out she's not gravid at all. Her anorexia and subsequent swelling, as well as the large white mass, was refuted by x-rays showing an empty abdomen.

My vet thinks that she is not releasing follicles down the oviduct & has developed an infection. The timing in relation to breeding is most likely coincidental, and upon further conversation with the vet, I believe Boudicca has had this problem her entire life. She has always been an "anti-social" gecko. Boudi has always had to be kept apart because she fights even with other females. It turns out she may have 1) a hormonal imbalance causing the behaviors/follicle retention, or 2) the retention of the follicles have made her stress for four years and effected her behavior.

She is now on .2 cc Calciquid (b/c she hasn't eaten in 6 weeks and is becoming malnurished) and .2 cc Zeniquin (for infection) daily. I'm to raise her temps to the mid-90s, soak her daily, and keep the humidity up in her cage. Her hotspot is already at 90-92, and I'm worried if I put a lamp over her cage I'll cook her. What's a good way to raise the temp 3-5 degrees? Currently, her heat comes from UTH.

If this doesn't work by a week from now, my next step is a spay procedure. Has anyone had experience with spaying a gecko? I would like to find out more about this so I don't go in blind.

Thank you so much!

I guess I should've read this before responding below... So much for a simple surgery.

Spaying geckos is no more difficult than dog's or cats... except... that they are tiny. Now with that said, your girl's surgery isn't considered elective anymore. The condition, from whatever cause is determined, adds risk of complications.

I know this might sound a bit retarded, but if surgery is the way taken, talk to your vet about having a blood donor standing by (I believe you said you have multiple lizards of this species).

Good luck,
Ian
