question about snake and snake room temp

reptimals May 31, 2006 12:04 PM

hello , i recently just made my snake room a fully heated room ... the avg. temp. is 85-86 degrees , now my question is, is that warm enough ? when i touch my snakes they dont neccesarily feel "warm" ... they dont feel freezing cold or anything but i was just curious if i was keeping them warm enough even if they didnt feel as warm , b/c i know when my snakes had heat tape/rope and stayed in the warmer side of the enclosure, they would feel very warm to the touch ... now my room is fully heated so its a bit different now ..

any thoughts would be nice ..

THANKS ..

Don't go by touch use a heat probe or temp gun to get your temps not by feel. They don't have a fever and you are not your mother!

A temp gun is a required tool IMO, in todays reptile room.

Also 85* is a little cool for the warm side of the cage I would use supplemental heat and up it to 90*. 85* is good for the cool side and room temp but I think you will be happier as well as the animal with a warmer hot spot.

Good Luck

If you are keeping your snake room at 85 degree's, you are keeping it way too warm. Most people I know keep their rooms in the 70's year round and utilize a proper heat tape setup to maintain a hot cage spot of the low 90's. Keep in mind that the heat tape will allow keep the cool spot of your cage well above your room temps due to radiant heat.

My advice, turn your heat down but maintain a proper hot spot.
