New Baby Ig

theloniousmonk May 31, 2006 12:15 PM

I just got this little Ig about a month and a half ago. He has really warmed up to me and never runs away when I try to get him from his house. He is about 1ft STL and growing. He keeps a nice fat belly and hang out with me alot. He still hates water and dislikes bath time and his constant mistings. He will "scratch" the water of of him when I mist. He loves blueberries and doesnt eat anything else when I hand feed him. He eats his greens and likes them much better than his MK salad so I have begun to alternate days between the two foods. He is in a 55 gallon Tall aquarium and when he out grows that he will be a free roamer. The tank is near a window and he looks outside most of the time he is in his tank. I handle him alot and he is quite docile.

My one question is when should I start potty training him?
Is it ok to start training when he still poops in his cage alot?

What type of potty training do you plan to do. Bathtub,
newspaper, etc.?

Newspaper
was going to start with newspaper in a shallow pan with water cuz he likes to poop in water.

He will potty train himself. My ig taught herself to go in the sink when she lived in my parents bathroom!

I meant to add...I tried to teach my ig to go to the bathroom in certain places....and she has been a free roamer since she was a year old (she is ten now)...she has always chosen her own spots...I either comply and adapt the spot, or...completely give her a new home! Haha! They are smart lizards with a mind of their own!

Mine chooses his own spots too. I always adapt to them and they're never in inconvenient places. It's probably a good thing he only defecates about once a day. Let him pick a spot and he'll keep to it.

Every once in a while, Bhruic will go somewhere he isn't supposed to, but I look at it as a passive agressive behavior. Sometime I did something he didn't like and he got me back for it by going to the bathroom all over my school papers!

Shhh!!! Don't say they potty train themselves! I find it amusing to mystify some people with the "I potty trained an iguana...". It sounds so difficult. Works well at parent teacher conferences too. Hey, I taught my iguana but you can't teach my kid?! (no offense to wonderful hardworking teachers out there... just to the lazy ones my kids had this year!).
