What do we have here?

viborero May 31, 2006 01:05 PM

Hello everyone. We got three cute little baby geckos 3-4 months ago. I wish I had taken pictures of them then, but I didn't. Anyway, we picked out the three because they looked so different from each other. Now one is a normal for sure, but I don't know what the other two are. I apologize in advance for the photo quality (or lack thereof) Any opinons?

This post will be "Grandma". The color is a little off, the stripe down the middle is not quite so pronounced, a little duller in real life.

Now here is "Powder". Named so because, unlike the picture, his back is actually a much lighter, almost dark creamy white. Actually, the color that the bumps on the base of the tail look like in the picture.

Thanks for looking!

You have two very nice looking babies! I am pretty sure Powder is a patternless. Grandma is a beautiful little super hypo tangerine carrot tail. One of the morphs I breed is that same morph. Grandma is almost a baldy, but has a few tiny spots on the head which count her out of the baldy category. She also has some nice potential carroting on the tail. Good luck with your geckos!!!

You guys are great! Just one more question about Grandma: is the stripe on the back a standard fixture for that morph or is it just a nice little bonus?

That stripe is a characteristic I looked over. Out of all of the SHTCT's I have seen, none have had a stripe like that. It does make grandma very pretty though, consider it an added bonus. There isn't a particular morph that stripe could be considered as, it's probably just some very pronounced yellow-orange on the back. Once again, you have some very pretty critters there!

I appreciate your kind words. Makes me want to go back to Petco and try to find some more of these little gems!

Yet another question: When can I sex them? Powder and the normal, Screamer (he used to scream when you'd try to pick him up) are about 5 inches in length. Grandma is about 4. I've looked, and I don't see much by way of bulges. I also don't see any glands there. Any tips?

I have been able to sex the majority of my geckos at about six inches in length. It takes a good eye and some experience to sex anything a little smaller than that. Very young ones simialr in size to Grandma require a photographer's loupe and a bright light to tell, and even then it isn't 100% accurate.. Bulges typically don't appear before the V of preanal pores on male's vents. If the vent remains poreless and bulgeless after the gecko reaches six inches, it is probably a female. Have fun with your geckos, they are indeed gems!

...thank you for the kind words and the information. I have to say, we've had them for a few months now, but lately I've really started to enjoy them so much more. What beautiful and interesting little creatures!
