Uromastyx transportation

I searched the forums and either searched by the wrong keywords or it hasn't come up before. I am looking at a new vet for Bruce -- one who is very knowledgable on uros, however she is about 100 miles away. Any tips on making the trip as easy and stress free for him? Many thanks in advance!

Bruce is so lucky!!

I have transported my Uros a number of ways. Archie used to deal with travel fairly well, I would just take all of his cage furniture out, and pack the 40 gallon breeder tank in the car and off we would go. For a temperary set up I would do the same thing only put him in a 10 gallon for the car ride. Do not taker them on trips on millet seed though, I tried it once to the vet and the poor guy looked like he was trying to ice skate as we turned. I ended up sticking my hand in the tank so he could sit on that while I was driving! (Luckily we didn't have far to go).

Mosca on teh other hand is not keen on traveling. Though, he isn't really keen on anything that involves physical human interaction, lol. What I have been doing with him is taking a shoe box, lining it with a towel, and then paper towels on that. In the winter I put heat packs under the bottom towel. Then i put him in the box, secure the lid, and off we go. He basically burrows in the paper towel and goes to sleep, at least that seems to be what he does. Make sure you secure the lid though, since they can otherwise pop it off and chasing a uro around your car while driving is an even worse idea than it sounds, lol.

I hope that helps at least a little!

What I do is put the uro into a pillowcase and close it with a long twist tie. This then goes into a medium small box with a towel to keep them from tumbling. This sits on the floor of my car. As long as it's not super cold out, the uro should be fine for the hours it takes to get there and back. He'll just sleep.

I have two suggestions . One put him into a shoe box or cardboard box just large enough for him to move around in .Make sure you poke holes in the top on one side of the box for ventalation .I keep half of the top intact . Put a layer of paper towels on the bottom with two or three hand warmer packages activated .Be sure he has enogh room to move off of the warmers if he wants to . Tape shut with duct tape and if going to the vet take the tape with you . You may want a towel to hold him with when you get there .This has worked well with my Mali . I had to leave my apartment because of the building being exterminated for over 4 hours with him .He was so calm when I returned he even ate his dinner , like nothing happened .
