FYI: WARNING for people who use outdoor hoses for reptiles

reptilehafen May 19, 2003 08:12 PM

We fill our plastic pool up frequently for our reptiles to bask and play in and this warning on the garden hoses caught my attention.
CONTAINS A WARNING.
IT READS: PRODUCT CONTAINS A CHEMICAL KNOW TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS OR OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HARM.
Every hose I investigated in Wal-mart had the Warning label on it.
I just thought I would share this with everyone in case some people were not aware of this warning.
Quite a few people I have mentioned it to have not.
There are hoses that say Drinking water safe FDA approved which seem to be around the same price as the others but safe to drink out of.
Better to be safe than sorry...
Happy and safe herping!!

That chemical is vinyl chloride, as in poly vinyl chloride, as in PVC. Most garden hoses are compounded with the flexible version of the same plastic used in plumbing pipe.

In other words, don't eat the hose.
