Why aren't there many (any?) bcc morphs?

paraboloid Jun 01, 2006 10:07 AM

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but why is it that there aren't more bcc hypos, aneries, etc out there? I'd imagine that this has to do with the fact that bci's are easier to breed, have been established in the pet industry longer and therefore breeders have had more of an opportunity to "discover" and selectively breed for certain genetic variations. But I'd also imagine that there has to be more to the explanation than that.

Thanks

Marc

There has been one or two Albino Suriname BCC circulating for a few years, but I don't think either have bred. There are some possible Hypos, but even the "Colombian" Hypos aren't Colombian. The Colombian Hypos like Salmons, were originated by breeding a Panamanian Hypo with a Colombian, and then to other Colombian morphs over the years.

I have seen Belem Brazil, and Suriname "Hypos" but none have been proven genetic, yet.

Anerys should pop up at one point. There may be subtle morphs out there that have just not been recognized, or proven. We have to wait until one spontaneously is born in captivity, or found in the wild and then bred.

A great majority of bcc breeders are purists... and morphs are the last thing on their minds..

I wouldn't be surprised if many bcc morphs have been culled or simply looked over...

Take care!

...there arent more bcc morphs...i think morphs detract from the natural beauty of boas...sure they are pretty in their own right and im not 100 percent against them i just perfer normal coloration in my boas...bci included.

The morphs, and supposed morphs, are also the cause of almost all the ugliness in the Boa market.. It blows me away sometimes... the amount of dishonesty.

Good points. I’ve often wondered why the hypo gene hasn’t really been capitalized on. Since it’s co-dominant, you could breed a hypo to a suri and get a 50% cross. After that, however, you could breed the hypo suri/Colombian cross to a suri and put MORE suri blood in there to “breed the other stuff out.”
Like you were talking about with the hypo Colombians, Chris, it’s been going on so long that no one bats an eye when you see a “hypo Colombian” as opposed to a “hypo Colombian/Panamanian cross” which is what they technically are since they HAVE to have SOME Panamanian blood in there to have the hypo trait.
I’m not advocating or condemning this, but wondering why no one has done it. I guess it would be what you said, Joe, about “purity” because for a few generations, you’d have a lot of animals that were suri LIKE, but could easily be spotted as NOT suris. I’d imagine though after several generations, you’d have animals that were pretty much indistinguishable from suris. You could do the same thing with Hoggs (or anything) until you had animals that LOOKED like pure Hoggs, but had the hypo trait. Again, maybe it’s just because the road to get there would produce generations of “maybe-not-so-desirable-looking” obvious crosses.

I personally love that fact that a lot of BCC owners like to keep it pure. I really hope they continue to do so. Everytime riobravo post something I can't wait to take a look. I also like the morphs, to me they are just beautiful as are the BCC's. The only thing I really don't understand is why BCC breeders dislike morphs and look down upon breeders who produce them. I know this is not all BCC and locale breeders but I have read some pretty nasty stuff on some web-sites that are outside of the United States. I say breed what you want and try to respect others if they breed something else.
