Multiple egg laying question

mobmilli92 Jun 01, 2006 10:16 AM

Our Draco is 4yrs old- my question is-
Is it normal to lay multiple non-fertilized egg batches? She is now up to her 5th set and each set has a good 10-12. She's never been with a male. Last year she did 3 after brumation. This year she's done 2 batches a month since waking up from brumation.

Just curious on why she's so busy with egg laying this year. Thanks in advance

Wow that is kinda a lot.. My girls who don't breed lay two normal sized 20-30 infertile egg clutches a year on average. Yours seems to be doing many smaller sized clutches. 5 is a lot though, the only time I had over two was when the females are housed with a few other females who were gravid, and cycling eggs. In my experience if the females are kept with other breeding females they seem to be more likely to lay many infertile eggs.

There is no other dragons around? None others she can even see? I mean there really isn't to much you can do about it. Just be prepared come spring, and make it as easy on her as possible. Make sure she is receiving extra calcium & vitamins, and a good healthy diet, and try her in the layin bin more often. How long are these clutches spaced apart? usaully on average for me they come every 3-4 weeks. If they are coming real close like days to a week she may not be finishing the first time, and expelling the remainder later. if this is the case she may not be totally comfortable with what you have set up for her to lay in. Are you taking her out of her cage and into a seperate laying bin when she is ready to lay? I've found this to be the best way. Setting them up inside the home cage your pretty much limited to what you can put in and how deep they can dig.

Draco is our only dragon- unless you count her reflection in the glass.

The earliest is 3-4 weeks sometimes adding a week. I know it's not her being done because she's done that- she'll lay a good 12 or so and then we'll find a few more over the next day or so.

She's not stressed from what I can tell- she'll have an endless appetite- she'll get really plump- dig for a good day and then lay them. Then she's back to normal and she starts over in a few weeks- at least so far. Once she lays them- she's on the thin side- so I wouldn't think she's holding onto them for later.

I wasn't sure if it had to with maturity & age.
Just wanted to be sure it wasn't a sign of anything to be concerned about.

Hopefully she's done for the season. Thanks
