Is there any difference between

the aquarium silicone and the GE 100% silicone? They smell a little different and the GE says not for use on aquaiums.

YES, there is a difference. I have had one bad experience with the standard stuff and had to redo the work with the aquarium safe silicone. Based on that experience I will never use the standard silicone for any type of animal caging.

can you give some more info please?

I know this is a little old, but I hope this helps you out.....

The main reason for it saying that it is not for use in aquariums is that when people were using it to build aquariums, they were doing it wrong. The tanks were falling apart. the tanks were way too big etc. Then these same people were sueing GE because of silicon failure. So that is when GE decided to put that on their labels "not for use in aquariums" just to cover their butts.

There are 2 type of silicon. Type one and type two. One has a mold inhibitor and the other doesn't. I think that that is the only difference between the two. But I don't remember which is which. I was going round and round with GE in emails. They wouldn't come out and say it directly, but one of their silicons is ok to use to build aquariums (the one w/out the mold inhibitor). I used to hang out at cichlid forums.com and posted all this info on their "build it your self" type forum a while ago, maybe2 yrs ago?

Once the smell of viniger is gone from using the silicone, it should be safe for your animal.

Hope this helps out some,
Rob
