how big will my garters get?

i have two garter snakes. they were sold a canadian plains garter snakes but im not sure. their black with green stripes on their back. Also is a 15 gallon tank big enough for two garters. thanks

Plains garters get up into southern Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. So the identification is quite possible. But there are a few other species of garters up there, too.

Plains garters average in the 20-28 inch range, though they can rarely get over 3 feet long. As snakes go, they are fairly sociable, so I'd say a 15 gallon could handle two snakes of average size. Watch them for signs of stress, particularly a reluctance to eat. If that happens, then they should be separated. And don't feed them together. Sometimes snakes get on opposite ends of a piece of food, and one winds up as part of the other's meal.
