Time of year for tadpoles?????

thebiologist Jun 01, 2006 04:35 PM

I am in Rochester Ny (upstate), when should I start seeing treefrog tadpoles? I know the grey treefrog which is one of the only treefrogs in my area its tadpoles have a red stripe on the tail, this is the species I am interested in. I used to catch them as a kid all the time at the pond by my grandfathers. Other than there where is the best place to find treefrog tadpoles, and when do they start to come out? Its already June 1st.

I know for a fact the Grey Tree Frogs are now breeding, as I work collecting mating pairs. The eggs hatch in about 5 days, and the tadpoles stay for about 45 days. In my experience, tadpoles don't venture into deep water. They usually stay around the edges, in the shallow parts. Keep your eyes out.

GTF's are in the midst off egg laying in the NE; seek areas w/ the most concentrated choruses, seek shallow ditches, swimming pool covers; any shallow spot water collects in. I find collecting tads is far easier than finding egg masses. Good luck.
