40 eggs and counting

bmulcahy Jun 01, 2006 04:40 PM

One of my female corns is laying eggs for the first time and she is at over 40 eggs and there looks like a lot more to come. She is almost 4 years old and great size. Should I have any concerns? It seems like they are slowing down and she has been laying eggs since I got into class at 8 am. How long can this go? My others did it in a few hours and laid around 20 eggs each. The eggs look good and she seems pretty placid right now. Any thoughts? Thanks!

wow... thats getting to be a record.... keep counting.... i'd just say, after shes laid, try to give her some water to "perk" her up a lil and possibly give her a fuzzy or 2 as soon as shes finished. i have heard of snakes laying so much that they pass, but if shes looking good....maybe shes not one!!! congrats!!! and dont mess with her for a while until shes not "fragile" anymore. you dont wanna stress her too much.

I can't count them all, but there at least 50 eggs(looks like only 1 dud)in the box. She is very tense right now and doesn't want to move or let me have the eggs. I figured I would wait till tomorrow when I can offer her some fuzzies. Any thoughts?

STEVES_KIKI Jun 01, 2006 09:26 PM

just let her rest and when you take the eggs away she will push you away with her coils... which is normal... after my snake laid her eggs, i got a spray bottle and sprayed some water on her which she drank almost immediately. i'm sure other people will have other ideas, but thats what i did.

I would leave her alone till morning. just let her rest.

Thats a pretty outrageous amount of eggs. I'd like to see pictures if youve got em.

bmulcahy Jun 02, 2006 12:25 PM

I will bring my camera in on Monday and takes some pictures. The best guess I can make as I try to coount is 54-55 eggs with only one dud. I waited till this morning and she gladly ate a few small fuzzies and I got her out of her nesting box. I will post pictures next week.

Thanks!

Brian

That is crazy! I've never heard of a corn having anywhere near that many eggs. Can't wait to see pics.

Do you have an incubator big enough to hold 'em all??

Colorfulcorns Jun 03, 2006 07:15 PM

If they are good I think you may have a new record egg count!!!!
If I remember Kathy Love's book has the record at 53 eggs..
Good Luck and keep us posted....

Hopefully I will be able to get an exact count on Monday. I wanted the eggs to get harder before I examined them closely. It is a weird clump in the sense it is very tall. Therefore, I will be concerned with some of the middle eggs. Violet(the mommy) made a clump that is at least 4 eggs high in some sections. From the top without looking under you can count over 30 eggs and as I move my moss I got to the 54. As of now there is only one bad egg. Every single egg except one is in the clump. For the person that asked about the size of my incubator, I am using one of those chicken incubators. It is pretty tall and very big. I will be asking for help on Monday when I try to post pictures. I have had problems in the past.

The only thing I know is that there will be a lot of snakes in my school next year and at the kids' homes. I give the baby snakes to any student that asks and has a note from a parent. last year I gave out 18 snakes. this year i have over 100 eggs.

Thanks!

Brian

Hopefully my wife will allow me to take the camera to school tomorrow ( I have a daughter graduating from HS and the camera is attached to my wife's hip for all the "events" Is this normal? After Violet laid all her eggs or so I thought - She came out and ate 3 fuzzies and I moved the eggs. 2 days later I was checking on her and there were 2 more eggs (both duds and one was crushed)in her nesting box. She definitely went at least 24 hours between eggs and ate a meal - then laid two more eggs - Is this normal? She was huge! I had posted about a week ago inquiring about snakes that were egg bound because she was so big and my others never looked like her - Well, we will see.

thanks!

Brian

Can I pick up the eggs to take a photo? Or should I do it within the incubator?

Thanks!

STEVES_KIKI Jun 06, 2006 03:39 PM

if they are in a clump, yes, you can take a quick photo. just dont let them get cold.... and to the other question...yes, its normal for snakes to lay the bad eggs later.....some people think they might actually be harder b/c they are sometimes swollen or odd-shaped. but the bad eggs are either usually laid before the whole clutch, or after.
