Giant Madagascar Hognose questions

iamsnakeshack Jun 01, 2006 06:35 PM

How is the general temperament of Giant Madagascar Hognose? The one I have come in contact with was huge and hissed like it meant business! I would also like a comprehensive care sheet on them (lots of stuff on hognose but not on Giants). Also if someone can give me the finer points on what to look for in a quality specimen, i.e. color and pattern. I have lots of experience with a verity of different snakes, but not with this one.

Thanks

I have a female giant hog that was supposedly captive bred. Her temperament is pretty laid back but,she has a crazy feeding response, once she knows food is around she'll hit anything that moves & fast at that. She has bitten me twice (while feeding her)Personnally I like the ones that have alot of clean black markings. You see alot of imports that have dirty brown overcast to them.I plan to breed mine someday but,I am really picky when it comes to buying a mate for her. jeff

Nine looking girl! Any venom reaction from her bites?

The only thing I noticed, was it seemed to itch a little in the bite area.

I also prefer the ones with cleaner black markings. Alot of imports I've seen have a ton of brown/blonde markings on them. The blacker the better imo. Here's an older pic of my male mad hog. He's an import that I picked up in '04 and has been a great. He has no feeding response, has never struck at me, and only occasionally hisses. He has never eaten over the winter months for me, but eats more than his fair share over the spring/summer/fall. They are a truly underappreciated snake.

That's a nice mad. hog you have there. It looks identicle to mine!Mine also doesn't eat during the winter.I agree they are underrated.I would love to see some hatchlings.I bet they are some feisty little critters. jeff
