Just wondering about my uro Rico...

fruitionx Jul 31, 2003 04:51 PM

Hi i was just wondering alot of you say that your uros love mealworms, carrots and other veggies...I have tried to give him mealworms, he just doesn't care, carrots he will lick and then won't touch them, any other veggie or anything else other than beans and greens he won't touch! Is this bad or ok? I find him a little odd...What i normally feed him daily are: Dry mix of beans and iggy food, which he eats as he pleases, probably about once every 3 days. Then for his greens he eats danelions maily, watercress~collard greens~mustard greens...I tried to mix it up a little with mealworms and veggies but he takes no intrest at all. Is this ok?
Thank you!

you could try waxworms. Kameko loves them! They don't have the hard exoskeleton like mealworms. It was the first thing I got him to eat. He also likes dried split peas. Your diet sounds excellent. I'm sure Rico's getting more than enough nutrition.

Hi,

Uros are like people, they pick and choose, have their favorites and don't always eat what is the healthiest for them. Rico seems to be eating great and he looks wonderful. I wouldn't worry about insects, they are only a treat anyways. Mine love waxworms, but waxworms have a lot of fat, again, use sparingly. Mine really don't like the dark greens that are the healthiest (turnip, collards, mustard) so I have to chop my food very fine making it difficult for them to be "picky". I always chop the cooked frozen veggies small and then sprinkle petite cooked frozen peas on top. I have some smaller uros, (bentis and sudanese), so the petite peas are great, but only one store carries them around here. Maybe you can try those if you can find them. Keep up the good work with Rico, he looks like a real sweetie.

Hey Lauren,

My female is picky too. Your diet sounds great already, sometimes they are just picky and their tastes change. It seems he is eating so much of what he likes, he obviously doesn't have to eat the other stuff. Keep in mind that less favored food will more readily be eaten when they are hungry. Sometimes if mine are only picking out a certain ingredient, I'll wait till late the next day to feed them, then I offer the less favored food. I feed my uros exclusively by hand actually (talk about tame!).

Another point of interest: my uros usually won't touch anything canned or otherwise preserved. Are you offering canned carrots?

there is DEFINITELY nothing to worry about. as long as he is getting his greens and vitamins. carrots, mealworms more so, are just treats. mealworms won't do much for a uro nutrion-wise, they just offer a little variety. if your uro doesn't want it though, there's no point forcing something on him he doesn't want. he looks beautiful and healthy, we all love rico. as long as he is eating the important stuff there is nothing to worry about.
