o/t in memory of stew

jeune18 Jun 01, 2006 07:35 PM

my cranky little man left me today. this is the second lizard i lost this week. the first one was a collared lizard who i thought was perfectly healthy and took to the vet because her cagemate was sick.

he was on tribissen and an eye ointment. after his initial eye appointment, i took him back because he got the sniffles. they kept him for the day and over night giving him two antibiotic shots. he has been home for the last few days doing fine. gracie died on tuesday. this morning i found stew on his back and thought he was dead. he was hanging on though. i rushed him to the vet and walter too since he has the sniffles and i figure he is next.

the collareds have never met the uros. does anyone know anything about diseases that wipe out collections in lizards?
please help, i don't want to lose all my lizards

That really sucks... I don't know of one thing that could wipe out a whole collection of animals so quickly but if it is possible i would have the vet do a necrospy on the uro or collared.

were the animals quarantined... and were you washing your hands in between animals???

but really all the explainations in the world aren't gonna make you feel better... so just remember they are in a better place, and that you did your very best.

Cheer up !!

That's such a shame, when it rains it pours hunh!

I would have to wonder if you or someone taking care of them at the time went from one tank to the other and maybe spread some germs. Were they home with you at the time or was your mom still watching them?

If one has something and you don't wash your hands or items you may use for both lizards, it may spread. You say eyes and sniffling was seen in them both, sounds like a bacterial infection/ resp.

Very sorry! I know at these times when ya lose a couple ya feel like packing it in, as though your not up to taking care of them properly. I have felt like this many times.
But things happen no matter how well we try and care for them.

Feel better soon!

Oh my gosh, Vonnie. As I am working my way up the list of posts to read, I am getting more depressed by the moment. I feel for ya, kid. I really do.

Quite a number of years ago I had an undiagnosed wasting disease slowly work its way through my collared collection (and other lizards, too). When it was all said and done, out of more than twenty lizards, mostly collareds, I had one lizard (an iguana) left. I didn't get another collared for years after that, fearful that it might strike again; and I was just plain scared to death of losing more animals that I loved. I hope no one ever goes through something like what I experienced--especially somebody who treasures her lizards as much as you do.
