Iguana Breeders

SandmanDI Jun 01, 2006 08:39 PM

Does anyone here breed their iguanas? If so do you sell them? I used to have an iguana a long time ago and I am looking to get me another one soon, within the next year or so. I want a hand-tamed, home-bred, whatever you want to call it. I don't want it to be farm raised or wild caught. If anyone has anyone who breeds Igs out of there home with plenty TLC then please tell me!! All help is much appreciated.

I can't think that most ig keepers would breed their igs at all after the things that happen to all the unwanted igs out there.

Regaurdless how you feel about breeding....may I suggest adoption? It's how a lot of us found our igs. You can look at the discriptions & see how old they are, vet care given, temprament, etc....

I'm sure there are more...but I used the Green Iguana Society's web site.

I'm so glad I used it. I found my pal, He was hand raised, adorable & is the best behaved iguana (next to Ig Daddy's Iggy I think)& Forest was within a days drive from here. He was even potty-trained!

So glad we adopted. Not all may be perfect but I'm glad we went that route!

Our little monster was abandoned at a construction site in a small cardboard box. He was extrememly easy to potty train and is really sweet (when he wants to be! LOL ). Where ever/ How ever you decide to go congradulations, and your iguana is lucky to have someone that is planing ahead so well!

It is not even economically feasable to become a breeder, or to breed them. Iguanas are cheap as heck, and still readily available.

Plus, it is neither morally, nor socially responsible to breed them, due to the numerous ones already in the market, and for adoption.

Iguanas up for adoption are often already tame, de-wormed, and socialized. Others are traumatized, or in pitiful state.

Research well, and don't try to be a good Samaritan. It may sound cruel, but one has to be realistic. Go for the healthiest, tamest you can find, and avoid the ones in deplorable state, unless you have the time, space, and especially, the money to do that. It will save you frustations, expenses, and heartaches.

Thank you all for the comments, I was thinking of adopting, but I was afraid that all you could adopt were older iguanas with something wrong with them. Also, I was wondering if anyone could share some cage pics and maybe some plans or designs or something. Thanks again in advance!!

i have a rescue. we get more igs through here than you can shake a stick at. most have problems. bugs, bugs, bones sticking out, missing limbs, bugs again, dehydrated, bugs, etc...
we are the only rescue in this area that will take 1)big mean constrictors and 2) big mean igs. nobody wants them. we have had a few igs die- what can i say. i have had to syrenge feed a few- fun stuff. many have MBD- they get the proper lighting and dont get any worse. we have had a few get thier leg or tail amputated. i personally like the ones with no tail- they cant beat the life out of you with it. :D if they are missing a limb- they cant scratch you as well, they all get around fine despite missing something. I very rarely get an ig that cannot be adopted out. it may take me a few months to get them tame enough and to find the right person, but they are always there. i actually ahve the reverse problem right now. i have 3 people looking to adopt an ig and i dont have any. (guess thats a good thing though)anyway- i know from true first hand experience you can get a good ig from a rescue!

as for caging- my cage is rediculously huge. its pretty much 3 boxes. theyre about 6 ft. tall and have logs and 3 shelves in it. they are next to each other. the 3rd cage can be divided in half to accomodate something smaller like a beardie or juvi ig. thats the only cage i have for them. i have a small one in the house for sick ones but its not any good for a healthy ig. to live in
