how can you tell..

babystolemydingo Jun 02, 2006 01:51 AM

if the frozen rats you buy at the store are fresh?

is there a way you can tell just from looking? the ones my store carries (very small store-so i doubt they move fast) seem like they might be freezer burned? the rats feet, tail seemed like a funny color, but im not experienced in frozen rats lol.

my 2 snakes (females 1100-ish gram range) havent eaten yet and i was told they eat f/t. B4 I bought them, the guy told me one was eating again and the other still hadnt ate yet since winter. I've had them a month now.

So I got thinking, maybe the rats ive been offering might not smell too fresh to them? so i placed an order at rodent pro for 40 small and 60 med rats. He said they take med rats but I got 2 sizes to be on the safe side.

I havent really bothered with them except to change the newspaper when they spill their water dish, as i want to get them eating b4 i really hold them

Whatchas think?
ty

-each of their set ups are the exact same-
tubs they are in;
39 1/2" L
20 1/4" W
7" H

flower pot hides on each side
newspaper lining
belly heat is a steady 91 on warm side
78-82 on cool side (depends on the temp in the room) and right now the moisture is 58. It fluxuates some but stays between 50-60

Well, How do you know. The only way to know for sure is to taste it. I prefer mustard and a tad bit of relish on my rat inbetween a bun, just like a hot dog. Within seconds of taking that first bite you will know if its good or not............... Or lol you can just tell by the freezer burn on the rat, like anything else that has been in the freezer for to long.

You NEVER put relish on a RAT!!! Mustard brings out their flavor better! LOL!

I look for freezer burn on ours outside of that he seems to not care too much about how long it has been in the freezer.

It's been said that ball pythons will eat carrion in the wild, so unless it's noticably decaying I wouldn't be overly worried about a bit of freezer burn. Bryan, Long time no see Kimo Sabe . How's "Hot'Lanta?"
