boa treated herself for constipation

snakehorse Jun 02, 2006 10:58 AM

I noticed for about the past 2 to 3 weeks my boa hadn't pooped. About 2 days ago I felt a lump about peanut size just before her cloaca and she looked a little bloated showing the skin between the scales. When I felt for the lump again I couldn't find it.

I also didn't think she'd gotten "fat" all of a sudden. I thought I'd wait a day or two and see what happened before feeding her again. She is fed 2 rat pups every 5 to 7 days and is a yearling about 3 feet long.

Then last nite I saw her soaking in her water bowl. After a while she crawled out, then back in. That's when I found a deposit of white about 1 1/2 inch long and 1/2 inch thick, it looked like white cheese. It was the size of her normal stool but all white. I was worried, it was the wrong color! Then I moved her water bowl and there was a huge poop - 4 inches long and 3/4 inch thick. Poor girl!

She had self-treated herself by soaking in the water bowl. Relieved herself, then went back to soaking.

I'm going to raise my temps (they were mid 80s hi side, high 70s lo side) and go back to misting everyday. perhaps feed her only one rat pup at a time til I see her have regular poops. and keep better poop records.

anyone else seen their snake do this?

Donna

The white is concentrated urates, totally normal.

Your doing fine and yes your temps were a bit low.

First off, I believe most will tell you one appropriate sized prey is the correct meal. Should be same diameter as the snakes largest diameter. Also, a yearling should be moving to once every two weeks.

My basic regimen -

Newborns to yearling, once a week
yearlings to adult, once every two weeks
adult (non-breeder) once a month
adult breeder - once every two weeks (during feeding season), they don't eat a lot while gravid. Also, may do once a week for a short period to help regain lost mass from having babies.
