undersized gator question

Chris13 Jun 02, 2006 02:20 PM

Hi, I have the opportunity to get an american alligator from some guy I know. Its 3 years old and its only 18 inches long because he has kept it in a 20 gallon tank its whole life. He says hes been feeding it goldfish and various meat scraps. I want to get it from him and put it in my 75 gallon tank. Do you think that with the proper nutrition and uv lighting that it will start to grow again? thanks.

Yes...however, the only benefit that lighting will have is going to be as a heat source. A proper nutrition is far more important than UV lighting with crocodilians. Ability to properly thermoregulate and get a good diet are going to be beneficial to it's growth.

Good luck,

Chris

You need to give him a good enclosure for his growth. For a haychling I like small baby pools. I don't like tanks, they are not made for crocodilians. Ronnie
