Gallon conversion formula

bonio100 Jul 31, 2003 05:32 PM

Hi,

Living in the UK, and being brought up on metric, im having trouble converting between ft/inches (not metric but meaasurable with tape measure!) to gallons.

Often people talk about 30 gallon tank etc....Could someone please tell me the formula to convert ft/inches length x depth x height into gallons?

EG, what would a 3ft by 12 inches by 15 inches be in gallons?

Thanks!

bob

Gallon is a measure of volume, so a 20-gallon enclosure is one that would hold a volume of 20 gallons. The metric equivalent is liter. One (U.S.) gallon equals roughly 3.79 liters. So as an approximation, our 20-gallon container here would be a 76- liter container in the UK.

A typical 20-gallon glass enclosure measures 30 inches wide by 12 inches deep by 12 inches tall. In the UK, these length measurements would be in meters or centimeters. The conversion is 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters; or, 1 meter (100 centimeters) equals 39.37 inches.

Hope this helps, michaelb

` I U.S. gallon, 128 fluid ounces, = 231 cubic inches. 36"x12"x15" = 6480 cubic inches. Divide by 231 = 28.05 U.S. gallons. If you want exact capacity, you must measure inside, length and width, and height to water level only.
