Iguana Cage

SandmanDI Jun 02, 2006 07:37 PM

Do any Iguana owners have pics of there cages they can share? If you have plans that would be awesome. I am looking for a large cage that would last an iguana it's whole life. Thank you all in advance.

Yes I know about an iguana's age. One of the reasons I think an iguana will be my next reptile. About the complexity of the cage, the one I am thinking about builiding is very complex so I would love to see yours too. You can e-mail it to me at L_S_Mills@msn.com . Thanks again!

Hi,

Are you setting up your iguana indoors or outdoors? If I have this right, I'm attaching a couple of pictures of my outdoor iguana enclosure. The main portion of the cage is 8' wide x 4' deep x 6' tall not including the apex for the roof. The pictures are prior to the installation of the roof and a few other items.

This is set up here in Southern California and my 5' rescue male columbian has been housed in it year round for the last two years. There is a central mist system tied into a nearby sprinkler controller which mists him down in the heat of the afternoon and humidifies his surroundings. Substrate in the enclosure is a mix of potting soil and compost which holds in humidity even in our dry climate. His hide is warmed with a pair of 150 watt ceramic heat emitters and a human heating pad set on medium. All controlled by thermostats which will kick on at 80 degrees or lower. I have checked on him when external temps were at freezing and his open face hide was at 82 degrees.

Also has an externally draining swimming area and plenty of climbing branches and tree trunks.

I'd be happy to discuss the building of it if you are interested and can probably dig out the plans, if I can remember where I put them.

Totally forgot about the PVC caging, I use to have a large 8'x7'x4' enclosure made of wire mesh and PVC. Cheap easy and durable. My only problem was humidity hard to keep the right level. It gets really dry in the winter here in ND.

Thats a really good caging idea, thanks for bringing it up.

Thanks Jeremy,

The inspiration for this one came from a couple of different sources. It is built with Schedule 40 pvc, the plastic version of hardware cloth and then the ceiling is made from standard hardware cloth. I did the ceiling this way to allow me to directly set heat on top if necessary.

This one fits my bill just about perfectly. Humidity in the right parameters, heat where it should be natural unfiltered sunlight exposure for as long as Darwin wants. I think the only thing I would change would be to increase the drain capacity of the swimming area to allow for better flow and to keep it from clogging as easily as it does when he defecates in the water.

I've had good sheds, and almost no refusal of food and he has finally tamed down to be somewhat handleable for a large male iguana. One of these days I might plant it to get some more interest going, but it is functional for now.
