I road cruise alot...it seams like everytime I do, I find a minimum of 10 DORs! Last night alone in 1 hour were 11...all pacific gophersnakes. I find in Livermore, Ca...cal kings, gopher, sharptails, nightsnakes,& rattlesnakes, toads(western & spadefoots) & 3 weeks ago a tiger salamander all DORs! This has to be taking a toll on their population. This is usually on back roads that didn't have that much traffic a few years ago.
In Martinez, CA my wife & I watched a car purposely swerve to hit an adult gophersnake on the side of the road.
South of Barstow, was a speckled rattlesnake that someone stopped & cut the head off of...no sign of being hit.
Most of the herps I find on the road, I do not take...I just help off the road or relocate them to a safer area away from the roads...areas that used to be plentiful, are getting harder to find certain snakes anymore.
just my 2 cents...I heard a line in a song the other day that said something like this... Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got til it's gone...Oh, they paved paradise to put up a parking lot..."
