King Share Home with Horned Lizard?

Ameron Jun 03, 2006 11:25 AM

I know, generally you want to have NOTHING in the same enclosure, but very spiny lizards are usually safe from snakes. There are limits to what a King will eat; my King rejected a Spiny instantly, only sniffing it once. The same snake loved Skinks and other reptiles, however, but seemed to be quite intimidated by the Spiny Lizard's scales.

Maybe it's possible for a King & Horned Liazrd to co-exist?

Anyone have any actual experience in this area? Suspect that the Horned Lizard would be safe - or become lunch eventually??

FR, you still around & can comment??

Back in the mid 90's I was living in central AZ and came across a road killed Cal king. I stopped to look at him and found that he had just eaten. I was curious so I cut him open and was suprised to find that he had just eaten a rather large horned lizard.

I would guess that most kings would reject a horned lizard also. But I would also bet that if they were constantly exposed to one they would eventually make a meal of it.

Besides horned lizards are notoriously hard to keep in captivity. Most states have banned them from the the pet trade.

Its probably not a good idea for either the lizard or the snake.
Just my two centavos.

My humble opinion is that one or both of the animals could be stressed from sharing an enclosure, or the horned could be a meal.

Yea, when your kingsnake is real hungry it will eat the spiny, spinys may be nasty to eat, but they are still food. Same for the horned lizard, only the result could be bad for both. often snakes die from consuming horned lizards. Cheers

I hear a lot of people, that are new to the hobby, ask if they can keep more than one species together. My first thought is why? Their answer is usually related to limited space or that they spent all of their money on the animals and didn't have anything left for a proper housing for the animal. I feel that if you can't properly house the animal, then don't buy the animal. It's that simple. As Frank (FR) often says, we try and make the animal fit our needs, instead of meeting the animals needs. I think your just asking for trouble if you house a King and a Horned lizard together.
