power failure/egg incubation...

lele Jun 03, 2006 12:24 PM

we are having some high winds and rain here and would not be surprised if we lose power at some point. I have my little blotchie eggs incubating and wonder how bad it would be if they drop well below their inc. temps for a few/several hours.

It may not happen (it will sooner or later) but want to be prepared. I can wrap the container in towels to maintain some heat but won;t last long.

thanks,
lele

They are simular to collared eggs /dang close as some blotchies come from the same locales.

Collared eggs are fine as long as they do not go below the low 70's at night or higher than 90 at the warmest part of the day.

They should be fine!

they are still nice and plump so I am hopeful. Just raining now, too so likely won't lose power - this time:-/

I always keep heat packs (that people use to keep warm when skiing) on hand for emergencies...you just have to be VERY careful not to cook the eggs using one. They can produce a lot of heat.

I don't know how long the water in your hot water tank would stay hot, but you could fill a hotwater bottle with warm water and put it under the eggs. Again...be careful not to cook the eggs!

Let's just hope the power stays on! We're going through brown-outs here right now....and I have my fingers crossed too.

good idea about the hand/feet warmers. I use those for vet trips in the winter, but did not occur to me for this situation - thanks for jostling my brain!

Fortunately we did not lose power. As for hot water, we have a well, therefore a pump so if we lose power we lose pump, thus we lose water - su*ks!
