Herman's Tortoise Diet Questions

cmscorns Jun 03, 2006 05:54 PM

This last fall my wife purchased a Herman's tortoise for her classroom and the little guy is doing great. He has more than doubled in weight and seems very alert and people oriented.

We have been feeding it a mixture of greens and lettuce varieties. We have a couple questions. What other types of fruits and vegetables can we add to its diet? We would like to build an outside enclosure to house it during the day and wonder if there are any plant types that we can add to the enclosure or any type of plants that we should avoid at all costs? We live in south west Michigan.

Well, fruit and root veggies should mostly be avoided. They should be fed mainly weeds & leafy greens. Fruit can be given as a treat every now and then. My little guy loves dandelions and you can buy seed mixes that grow different plants for mediterranean tortoies (www.turtlestuff.com).
