My Dragon Slow Down! Advice!

Paradon Jun 03, 2006 09:14 PM

My juvenile beardie is about 9 inch long SVT, and he is slowing down on his eating habit. When he came out of hibernation a couple months ago, he was eating fine...eating crickets twice daily. Then a couple weeks ago it started to rain; naturally, he can see out the window and decided to slow down by going underneath the log because it was cloudy outside. A couple days later he came out but did not have the appetite he once had. When I physically examine him, it appeared he was shedding also ( I don't know if that has anything to do with it). Anyway he started eating several days ago, but wasn't that much hungry; he only ate a little bit compared to the previous days. The strange thing is, if I hold him and feed him, he would eat the crickets, but if I put some food in his cage, he would not even bother to chase the crickets around. Does every bearded dragon slow down at certain age, I'm just curious? I just need someone with experience to tell me if that's just a normal phase, and that I'm not doing something wrong. If I'm doing something wrong...tell me...and I will fix it. Thanks!

It is very unusual for dragons under a year old to brumate. It would be better to have more info about your setup. Things like what is the basking temp? Do you have UVB lights? How long do you leave the lights on per day? What sort of substrate do you have? How old is your dragon exactly? (or as close as you can estimate).

You say your dragon is 9" SVT? What do you mean by SVT? Usually dragons are measured by Snout to Tail length (STL) or Snout to Vent length (SVL).
