Yawning tree frog ???

Turt-Liz-Wiz Jun 04, 2006 08:47 AM

I just got my first pair of tree frogs (unfortunately, one escaped to the back yard, and i'm still hunting 4 it, here the temps r perfect, so i just hope he/she's okay). I just noticed, that the one i still have just did a "strange" thing. He/she slid into the water container, half of its lower body under water, other half clinging to the sides, than he/she started "yawning" several times, while the stomach seems to contract and relax. After that he/she climbed his/her favourite branch and ate a cricket. I assume this has something to do with drinking?

Second question, how can you tell if my treefrog is a male/female, besides the nuptial pads @ breeding season?

Third, i'm not sure if my frog is either an Indonesian form of the whites tree frog, or a white lipped tree frog. Its slender compared to pudgy WTF's, dosent have a fold on top of the eye, but lacks the white'ish stripe on the leg like i see in most pics. The lip colouration isnt very noticeable either, its white-grayish, fuses with the green body. I also noticed its ability to change colour from dark green to bright green. Its about 3 inches long @ the moment, gonna post picks sometime soon.

P.S : could some1 post some pics on juvenile WTF's and WLTF's as a comparison? thanx

Sounds like your frog was shedding its skin. See my post below "How can they do that?" for a disgusting photo of the process. My frog usually does the yawning and squirming while sitting out of the water. If you look closely you'll notice that they are pulling the skin into their mouths and eating it!

I've never seen my frog drink by opening his mouth and taking in water. He does spend his evenings sitting in the water bowl.

My frog reference book (by Bartlett) says its hard to determine gender in white's. Adult males often have a darker throat with looser skin than the female. And males are also a little smaller.

The photos I've seen of the WLTF shows a distinct white line running from the lower lip and ending just above the front leg. If you look at the photo below of my frog, you'll notice the color of the lower lip stops at the edge of the mouth. Also the WLTF appears to have a longer nose than the WTF.

My guy changes shades of brownish green.

if you frog is "yawning" it is shedding it's skin, they don this often, esp. when they are still under a year. didn't you know what kind it was when you bought it? the WHITE LIPPED have WHITE LIPS! and whites treefrogs aren't supposed to have folds, unfortunatily many people overfeed them and the folds can lead to blindness. how did your frog excape, didn't you have a lid on?

Turt-Liz-Wiz Jun 05, 2006 03:25 AM

yeah, i did have a temporary lid on. Apparently, i think he/she must have pushed the lid and jumped to the backyard (its kinda like an indoor garden with lots of plants and two tall thin trees). At least the other is fine. Now i put a misting jug on top of the temporary lid as weight, so its impossible to push. I've read that the Indonesian forms of WTF's are more slender than australian WTF's, and maybe since its still young, it doesnt have the folds. The lips are exactly like a WTF's, doesnt have a clear white line like WLTF's, yet no folds at all over the eyes. Currently i'm feeding him/her crix. Very smooth green skin ^^. Another thing i'm curious about is that his/her backlegs are transparent on the posterior, so you can see the pinkish muscles.

the things on the legs are fine, they just get those from getting older and stuff, nothing to worry about. yours sounds like a whites, look at these pics and tell me if that is what you have:

Turt-Liz-Wiz Jun 05, 2006 11:09 PM

That is EXACTLY what i have. Is that a juvenile? And when does the folds form anyway? coz most pics of whites i've seen have folds.
