Suboc Eggs!

johnbort2 Jun 04, 2006 10:09 AM

Woke up this am and found my girl with 6 eggs so far. I am still setting up my incubator this morning, so those are the only ones I see so far. This is good news, cause my Argentine Rainbow boa laid 7 slugs last week.
Couple questions tho. This is what I did for an incubator. Got a cooler and filled up the bottom with water bottles that were filled with water. Under the water bottles is heat tape. This is all controlled by thermostat. The incubating medium is damp Perlite. I was going to cover the top of the eggs with sphagnum moss to catch any condensationt that may form in the air tight container.
Does this all sound right? Thanks, John

my subocs won't be breeding until next year. Hopefully some more experienced Bogie-keeper than myself can fill you in on the incubation conditions.

Post pics of the eggs

John

Thanks. Here are pics..one more question. When I pulled the female out, she was a little wraped around the eggs and the whole stack turned upside down.(all stuck together) I know they shouldn't be turned, but immediately put them back to the side they were at and laid them in the medium. There are some at the bottom that are covered up by the others..all surrounded by perlite, a little sphagnum moss and covered by a paper towel. Is everything right? This is my first clutch and I am a worried parent? (used to my boas) thanks

i know if they get turned right after being laid, its ok b/c the air hasnt yet settled. so you're not drowning the babies... well, because theres no babies yet.... other than that i have no clue.....if the clump is VERY long....i'd just put moss in there...but thats just me. i'll let someone else answer that question....

I always incubate my eggs the same way as my cal king, desert king, gray banded king, milks, and corn eggs. I just put them in an empty tub of butter with small air holes punched in the lid. I use damp peat moss and keep them at room temperature until they hatch. Room temperature, however, in my snake room, ranges from 84 in the day down to 75 at night. I occasionally will use moist paper towels if the eggs look dehydrated, and I usually have to add a little water to the sides of the tub (not directly on the eggs) if the peat moss looks dried out. The butter tubs are free, and the peat moss was a huge bag from Home Depot that I have had for about 10 years that at the time cost about $2-3. I think I will probably have enough to still use the same bag for another 2-3 years. I have had suboc eggs hatch as late as Thanksgiving weekend.
