Never give up on a lost snake

DavidY Jun 05, 2006 10:06 AM

I picked up a really nice pair of hypo hondo's at a show last October. To my dismay, the male escaped from his cage in late December. I tried to look everywhere I could think of, checking heat sources, leaving out thawed pinkies, etc. but never was able to find him. Well, yesterday I was doing some chores in my herp room and there he was climbing around the back of my sink! He looked fairly healthy and energetic and only a little on the skinny side. I gave him a nice soak in some luke warm water and then set him up with a nice new warm clean cage. I also weighed him and he had only lost 1 gram (but that was after the soaking so he may have been a little lighter). I have to run to the store today to pick up some pinkies for him (my other Hondo has progressed to large fuzzies already). The moral of the story...never give up on a lost snake. They truly are amazing creatures! Cold Blooded Rules!

...Yes it is! I was very excited when I first spotted him behind my sink. He's right at home again and he eagerly wolfed down 3 thawed pinkies last night. I'm feeding him slowly at first and will gradually increase the amount. Here's a pic of him taken today...

Last year I sent out an adult pair of w. hognose to a friend so he could breed them this year. Around January he informed that the female got out and could not be found. I gave him a few suggestions on where to look, no luck. Then just a few weeks ago he said he found her. Outside of the house near some ivy. I live in So. Cal. and he lives in Virginia. Very lucky that she made it through a much colder winter.

Wow, that's even scarier, to lose a snake outside! I live in New Hampshire where only indigenous herps could survive the winter. However, my hondo did manage to survive the winter in my basement as well as several inches of water during the worst spring flood in 70 years. Truly amazing animals!

...the new male hondo I picked up at the Spring reptile show to replace the first one??? He's het for hypomelanism and anytherism and double het for ghost. Now if only all this had happened with my female, then I'd have one male and 2 females! (lol) Now I'm stuck with 2 males and only 1 female. I wonder if I could talk the wife into letting me get another female or two...

Accidentally included the wrong pic in my last post. Good ol' Bilboa! Always trying to get in every picture. lol!
