Tiny insects in toad tank

froggz37 Jun 05, 2006 11:37 AM

I've posted this message on a few other forums and wanted some opinions from everyone here. So, here's the story...

A few days ago I was attending to my toad and found feces. So I grabbed a plastic spoon to remove it and found that there were many tiny white bugs of some sort crawling on it. They werent on the toad or substrate but I bathed him and moved him into another tank I had set up anyways. I just got some pics of the pooh, they are bad pics but you can see the size of the bugs. The container in the pics is one of the gerber babyfood containers that is no longer than a bic lighter. These bugs are so small you could fit two to three of them on the head of a pin.

I've been told that they are harmless and benificial to a tank, but does anyone know what type of bug they are? I'll be getting my microscope out later today to try and identify these but I'm not quite sure where to start. Anyone else have them in their tank??

Hi, I don't know what those bugs are called, but I find them in some of the water bowls in some of the tanks, but not in others. Sometimes I find them in a bowl that I changed only hours ago. I can't figure it. Everybody gets soil from the same bags, so why aren't they in every tank? Go figure.

The good news is, even with them showing up all the time, none of my frogs or toads have ever gotten sick. And I have been keeping toads for over 27 years, so if those bugs were a danger, I would have seen it by now.

If you ever get a positive identification on them, please email me. I'd love to know. Kisco@toadilytoads.com
