Shipping reptiles

stano40 Jun 05, 2006 12:04 PM

I am asking a question if anyone has gone through the procedure of being approved for shipping reptiles through FEDEX.

I have just started my procedure of getting certified through FEDEX, but another breeder was just telling me the FEDEX does not ship live animals.

I have been told that FEDEX is the carrier to use for live animal shipments.

Is there another alternative if FEDEX doesn't ship live animals?

I know there is delta dash, but I haven't checked them out yet.

I would like to use FEDEX if possible.

Any help in the question is appreciated.

Thank You.

Fedex will ship live animals including snakes if you set up a specific account with them to do so. Delta Dash is more expensive and I believe it is airport to airport and not to the buyer’s door. USPS will ship lizards and I believe turtles overnight but they will not ship snakes at all. I believe if you use USPS the receiver will have to go down and pick the package up. For most people Fedex will probably be the carrier of choice. I have not had good experiences with other carriers.

So far FEDEX told the other breeder that they only ship horses and cattle and that they do not ship live animals?

I'm really confused about this and everywhere I read breeders and other people ship through FEDEX and are certified to do so.

Live Animals and Ornamental Marine Life (Including Live Fish)

FedEx Express does not accept live-animal shipments as part of its regular-scheduled service and does not transport household pets such as dogs, cats, birds and hamsters. FedEx Express may accept certain shipments of live animals such as horses, livestock and zoo animals (to and from zoo locations only) on an exception basis if approved and coordinated by the FedEx Live Animal Desk (call 1.800.405.9052).

If approved by FedEx, we may accept non-venomous reptiles, amphibians, live/tropical fish and beneficial insects on an exception basis under the following conditions:

1. Shipments must be from a business to a business (from a breeder to a pet store, for example).

2. The shipper must have its packaging tested and pre-approved by FedEx Packaging Design and Development for the type of animal being shipped. Call 1.800.633.7019 for assistance. It is the responsibility of the shipper to adequately package shipments for all temperature extremes and handling conditions.

That is from their site. Ive used them with no problem and have let them know what was in the box.

OK, so why do a few sites show how to be certified as a shipper for reptiles. These persons are business's shipping to there customers via FEDEX.

What you are telling me that they just don't label what is inside the box??

Then why be certified?

Read the second paragraph again carefully.

I have received several animals from breeders who use FedEx. Each went through the process required to ship their animals, as there are specific protocols. Unfortunately, not all FedEx personnel are aware that their company offers this service.
Sometimes it takes speaking to the correct person to receive valid information. Check out the Shipping Forum.
Good luck in your quest.
Best regards,
althea

I was approved to ship live reptiles with FedEx a few months ago.
The approval procedure was not difficult and took about 3 weeks. I did have to send a test package and there were quite a few forms to fill out and/or sign.
On the whole a painless process.
