Baby ribbon snakes!

acalderon Jun 05, 2006 12:47 PM

I just recently got a female ribbon snake from a friend's friend about 4 days ago. We had no idea she was pregnant, and this morning we go to check on her & she has about 10 or more little babies!! I am just wondering how to care for these little guys because I have no clue what to do. I have many pets, but none of them have had babies yet. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on what to do about feeding them, sheltering them or anything. Thanks!

umm tough 1 anyways put the little guys in a terrarium 10 gallons is fine feed em alot of tiny minnows cut up worms and tiny tadpole they will shed soon so keep air mois keep temps at 75-80 and humidity at 70 provide vitamin supplaments go to vet and provide 14 hours of light that would be it.

Thanks! That was really helpful. A couple of them have already shed, so now we have the light on & my boyfriend is going to buy their food. We live in Denver, Colorado. I can probably sell you 1 for $20 - that will work because we have two 10 gallon tanks already. Do u know how long the babies have to stay with their mom before we can start selling them?

If it is a Ribbon Snake you will want to stick with feeder fish. Ribbon Snakes are not known as worm feeders. Be careful when feeding them together as they will fight over food and fatalities can occur. They can be removed from their mother immediately as her job is finished and the babies are on their own. Some baby snakes will fail to thrive but most breeders begin selling their babies after they shed and have eaten a few times.

You may house them together as long as you watch them while feeding. It is problematic especially with a larger number in one cage. Supply them with a water bowl for soaking and a rough object like a rock to help them shed. Humidity is not apt to be an issue.

If yours is a Western Ribbon or any other species native to Colorado it is illegal to sell them without a permit. Another problem is shipping. It will take a few months to set up a shipping account with FedEx to be able to ship snakes. Air carriers like delta dash are very expensive. It is illegal to ship snakes through the post office. It is against their policy to ship them and you must accurately label the package regardless of what carrier you use.

this is urent because you have a 10 gallon tank keep light far away because mine overheated to 100 degrees ant keep a digital thermo under basking light where snakes bask and one on cool end if tepm rises higher than 87 move light back until 86 is rached
