Mold on Fertile Egg

reptilicus81 Jun 05, 2006 04:23 PM

I tried searching the archives, but I am curious why mold grows on an egg with blood vessels? My female laid a clutch of 6 on 5/31 and today I noticed one of the eggs has mold on it. It still has blood vessels, but it is really cloudy in the area where the mold is growing. There is no condensation on the top of the bin, and the temp is a steady 88 deg. I have two clutches in separate bins in my incubator....it seems to be my luck that the normals are expected to hatch in 5 days, and the pastel clutch has mold on week one! Let me know what you think, I am very worried for the clutch!
Also, the egg that is molding looked different from the others the day it was laid. Check out the picture below...the egg that has gone bad has blood vessels that are visable through the shell (left top next to the dud)!

Here are the recent pics:

And my healthy clutch:

-----
---------
3.13 Normal ball pythons
1.0 Pastel ball python
1.0 Plains Garter
0.1 Rosy boa
0.1 Normal Kenyan Sand Boa
1.1 Anery Kenyan Sand Boa
0.1 Leucistic Texas Rat
1.2 Dumeril's Boa
-----My list is too long, so I'll stop here!

The presence of mold usually indicates fetal death. Also Too much moisture promotes the formation of mold which will cause destruction of the eggs' contents. Sometimes during incubation you will have an egg go bad that is attached to the rest of the clutch. Generally this will not be a problem for the rest of the clutch. If you are concerned about the spread of the mold, take a Q-tip and gently wipe the mold off of the egg. You may need to repeat this process every few days.
