Guyanan Collared, Tropidurus. hispidus

roasty Jun 05, 2006 05:52 PM

I have had a Guyanan Collared Lizard for 5 years. His normal diet is 1 dozen vitamin-dusted crickets/week.

This past week he's gotten to look very skeletal and has had much less movement.

While cleaning his cage today, I noticed that there were between 6-8 cricket carcasses strewn about. It would appear he either did not eat them, and they just died or he did eat them and didn't digest them well.

Could this be treatable digestion problem or is it likely he's approaching his old age and is unable to feed himself?

since you have had your guy for 5 years then you must know if his temps are right. So my thoughts are maybe check him for parasites/ worms.
Sometimes they do not digest their food/ or throw it up whole if they have worms. They also can become lethargic or inactive, and thin.

They can get parasites from their feeders, so you may want to get a fecal done and find out if that's his problem.

Hope he perks up for ya, let us know how you make out. I like his pic he's a handsome guy, and welcome here anytime

Thanks for the welcome. Of course I wish it didn't have to be under these circumstances.

Your post makes me think... yes, I know his temperatures pretty well, but I'm fairly new to my current apartment (for this season anyway). I love it cold, so I've jacked my AC up quite a bit. His cage may be in a place that gets too much cold air, as he seems to be constantly putting himself by the lamp. I will move him into my room or the bathroom and hope he feels better by morning. Otherwise I will just have to take it further.

Please cross your fingers for Norm ladies and gentlemen.

btw, that was just a stock photo of his species from the internet. I would say he looks nearly identical (in his more healthy days).

them NOT to digest food and they will throw it up, whole looking almost like it went in, or can even eliminate it through the bowels, and have it come out the same way.

I hope raising your temps or moving him will help to make him more PERKY !

I put him in my room that is a bit warmer than the rest of the apartment. I also blocked the A/C vent. Hopefully this will help him in the meantime before our vet appointment tomorrow.

Thanks for your help! I will keep you updated.
